DYK: Did You Know

  • The average American will drink 54 gallons of soda pop this year. The increased consumption of soft drinks means that many Americans will not drink enough milk to protect themselves against osteoporosis. Health practitioners fear that an osteoporosis epidemic is around the corner unless health practices can be changed.
  • Results from the Nurses Health Study shows that brisk walking can reduce the risk of heart disease by 40%. Women who walked 3 hours a week or did vigorous exercise for half that time were able to lower the risk of having a heart attack.
  • People who practice good health habits that include exercise and not smoking live longer and with fewer disabilities than those who don't make healthy lifestyle choices.
  • Older women seem to store fat in their bodies more readily than younger women do, even if they eat the same amount of calories. The metabolic rate may be kept constant when eating several small meals each day.
  • Several separate studies showing how garlic and onions promote good health include findings that garlic lowers cholesterol and blood pressure levels, and that allicin, a sulfuric compound in garlic and onions, fends off the viruses, bacteria and fungi that attack humans.
  • A new food pyramid for adults 70 and over has been proposed. The pyramid emphasizes more water consumption and supplements for calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin B-12.
  • Obese people are at higher risk of premature death, according to a new study. The study is final proof that being overweight can shorten your life, without evidence of any other health problems. The study found that being overweight increased risk from dying of heart disease or cancer.
